The Technical Director is primarily responsible for supervision and construction of production scenic designs for Diamond Head Theatre. The Technical Director is a full-time exempt position responsible for the operations of the DHT Scene Shop, both as a building center and a design workshop. They ensure safe working practices, provide production management, and facilitate repair and maintenance of the theatre resources and equipment. Key to this is a strong work ethic centered on excellent organizational skills and the ability to develop and maintain positive, collaborative relationships and communications with all artistic parties (designers, actors, etc.), as well as administrative staff, board members, and volunteers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise operations of the scene shop which includes, but is not limited to:
    • Purchasing / Budget
      • Determines the necessary technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for individual shows.
      • Assists in determining of budget for building and designing a show; maintains inventory and orders specialized supplies. Purchases, leases and/or borrows equipment as needed. Ensures that invoices for payment and/or receipts for disbursement are promptly submitted.
    • Construction
      • Creating construction drawings/models for the design and engineering of sets with knowledge of Vectorworks software, or another relevant method.
      • Supervises and safely constructs scenery for all in-house productions, working with the artistic team to ensure a high level of artistic quality.
      • Possibly act as a ‘Designer’ for in house productions in the absence of a qualified designer if one cannot be determined or departs project.
      • Stays abreast of new technology and software relative to scenic design and construction.
    • Equipment / Inventory maintenance
      • Maintains current knowledge of all scene shop equipment and supervises training on all equipment.
      • Oversees the maintenance of company vehicle when needed.
    • Supervision and training
      • Manages back-of-house staff, and along with the Production Coordinator, helps recruit, manage and retain back-of-house volunteers.
      • Enforces safe work habits in all workplaces. Develops, implements and monitors policies to ensure a safe work environment in the scene shop, back stage and stage areas.
      • The Technical Director will train and mentor the Assistant Technical Director to be able to stand-in when the Technical Director is unavailable. The
      • Technical Director will periodically monitor the succession plan to ensure the sustainability and longevity of Diamond Head Theatre.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills / Abilities:

  • A minimum of 5 years of carpentry or related experience.
  • Ability to communicate positively with staff, artisans, and volunteers to establish their needs efficiently and courteously.
  • Ability and knowledge (including familiarity with ADA and OSHA compliance) to handle multiple, simultaneous tasks in a timely manner.
  • Delegates effectively and meets staff, artisans, and volunteers where they are in their level of experience.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Heavy-lifting abilities; the ability to lift 20 pounds regularly.
  • The ability to safely climb ladders while carrying 20-30 pounds.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Competent, working knowledge of theatrical equipment, design tools and software.
  • Ability to work effectively under minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other team members.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings/weekends; a flexible schedule is a requirement and patience and a good-natured attitude.

Looking for an experienced Carpenter to help build theatrical sets at Diamond Head Theatre. This is a chance to put your artistry and talent to work and see your creations on stage for our upcoming world famous productions including West Side Story and Les Misérables! Work is M-F between 9am-4pm (16-40 hours per week) at Diamond Head Theatre, 520 Makapuu Ave.

Responsibilities include reading technical drawings and constructing and painting to design, purchasing supplies as needed, and striking sets at the end of a show. The Scene Shop Carpenter will learn the finer intricacies of theatre staging including positioning of scenic and rigging elements.

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years carpentry experience
  • Strong knowledge of carpentry tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic theatrical rigging, mechanics, electricity and electronics along with ETCP (Entertainment Technician Certification Program) certification is an asset.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy and precision in measurements.
