BALLET & TAP FOR YOUNG DANCERS

Fridays

Welcome to the wonderful world of dance! These classes introduce the young dancer to dance class etiquette, basic ballet technique, and basic tap steps.  They also help develop coordination, rhythm, musicality, and a love of dance.  Attire:  Ballet shoes/tights in pink, black, white, or tan; solid colored leotard; tap shoes; hair pulled back
in a ponytail or bun.

Erin McFadden began dancing at eight in Southern California.  She began in tap and jazz and soon fell in love with dance.  She has studied tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical and modern.  She fell in love with musical theater when she did Godspell at age nine and has done shows like 42nd Street, Aladdin, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Urinetown and Hairspray. Recently she has performed in UHM’s Oklahoma and DHT’s productions of Show Boat, Catch Me If You Can, White Christmas and 42nd Street

 

 

 

 


BROADWAY JAZZ

This is one of our most popular classes.  Whether you’re an experienced pro or a newcomer to the stage, you’ll have a ball learning the dance styles used in theatre today, helping you become the performer who gets the part!  Enrollment limited to 25. Due to the popularity of this class it is sold out with a very long waiting list.  Due to the length of the waiting list, we are no longer taking names for the waiting list. John Rampage is well known to Honolulu audiences having directed and/or choreographed The Producers, La Cage aux Folles, Anything Goes, Hello Dolly, Peter Pan, Follies, Mame, Cinderella, Phantom, and Nine, a recipient of seven Po‘okela Awards. A 35-time Po‘okela Award winner, John’s work for DHT includes directing, choreographing, and starring in Cabaret. He also directed and choreographed DHT’s The Pirates of Penzance, Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George, and Crazy for You, and Manoa Valley Theatre’s productions of Into the Woods, Grand Hotel, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and Cabaret. In addition, he has headed awardwinning productions at LCC and continues to teach at Queen Emma Dance, Inc. and DHT. In 2009, John returned to the DHT stage after a 10-year absence as “The Man In Chair” in The Drowsy Chaperone. And, no, the role wasn’t written for him, it just seemed that way. John was also the recipient of the Hawaii State Theatre Council 2006 Pierre Bowman Award.


DAYTIME TAP

Thursdays

Adults (Ages 17+): 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Adult students will learn and review basic musical theatre tap vocabulary, steps, combinations and techniques while improving balance and coordination in a one hour class utilizing popular Broadway music. No previous dance experience or training is necessary. Tap shoes required; oxford style tap shoes preferred for support, balance and sound quality.

Anna Motteler is a graduate of the Alabama School of Fine Arts where she trained professionally with Dame Sonia Arova and apprenticed with the State of Alabama Ballet.  Other professional training includes Chicago City Ballet School with Maria Tallchief, North Carolina School of the Arts with Melissa Hayden, and Show People Hawaii with Gary McCurdy and Brian DaSylva.  Since 1980, she has performed locally in various productions with Ballet Hawaii, Honolulu Dance Theater, Hawaii Ballet Theater, Diamond Head Theater, and Tau Dance Theater.  Since 1990, she has taught dance locally at various schools including The Movement Center, 24/7 Danceforce, Punahou Dance School, Mid-Pacific Institute, Ballet Hawaii and currently Queen Emma Ballet.  

 

 


DAYTIME BALLET & STRETCH

Thursdays

Adults (Ages 17+): 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Adult students will learn and review basic ballet vocabulary, steps, body positions, techniques, styles and musicality while building strength and flexibility in a one hour barre and half hour center, utilizing ballet and popular Broadway musical theatre music. No previous dance experience or training is necessary. Leather or canvas ballet slippers are required. Dance or yoga wear is preferred.

FLAMENCO FOR BEGINNERS

Wednesdays

These courses cover rhythms, posturing, arm- and foot-work, castanets, and the most popular Flamenco dances. Dance attire should include a full skirt and flamenco or character shoes for women and heeled boots for men. Students need to supply their own pair of castanets.

Vanessa Chong has studied flamenco in Spain, Argentina and the U.S.A.  She has choreographed and danced in Hawaii Opera Theatre’s Carmen and Honolulu Theatre for Youth’s Ferdinand the Bull.

 

 

 

 


HIP-HOP

Learn to move and groove like your favorite pop star! This class will infuse high energy, hiphop, and street dance moves into mini routines. Each class will include warm-ups, strength and flexibility exercises, and dance sequences focusing on style and technique. Attire: Loose fitting clothes and supportive athletic shoes.

ALL THAT JAZZ

Jazz Dance is a fusion of broadway, modern, ballet & theatre dance styles. A strong foundation is built on developing a knowledge of dance vocabulary with the support of a warm-up of stretching, conditioning, and technicque & choreography. Students will also gain alignment, muscular strength, flexibility, coordination, discipline, vocabulary, and musicality. They will also increase their performance abilities that add to their presentation, self-confidence, self expression and team work skills. Learn to express yourself through the language of DANCE. Pau hana performance optional.

Attire: Comfortable dancewear and jazz shoes, jazz boots, ballet slippers or jazz sneakers recommended.

Deanna Luster has co-directed/choreographed DHT’s Po’okela honored production of Titanic, directed/choreographed Manoa Valley Theatre’s Footloose, Hawaii Theatre Center’s Snow Queen & Wishes & Wings and has received a Po’okela for Choreography for Army Community Theatre’s Damn Yankees. Other choreography credits include HTC’s Christmas with Friends & Nabors, numerous Kaimuki High School Performing Arts productions including West Side Story, The Rocky Horror Picture Show & South Pacific. She choreographs and teaches for the DHT Shooting Stars. Her performing credits include MVT’s Cabaret, numerous DHT shows such as Phantom, Cinderella, Carousel, Victor/Victoria and Follies, & Dreamgirls at Hawaii Theatre Center. Stage manages various DHT and KHSPAC shows. Deanna is also a certified Reiki Master, IQM, ARCH Master Practitioner, a graduate of Sacred Path Healing School, and Zena Rommett Floor-Barre Technique certified.


SILVER STARS

Expanding the reach of dance and theatre arts for seniors, Silver Stars is offered for those 60 years and older.  Class covers dance styles used in theatre today.  All levels welcome.  Enrollment limited to 20.

The Beginner Tap class focuses on basic tap steps and simple combinations designed for dancers with little or no experience. The Intermediate and Advanced Tap classes will introduce more challenging tap steps, combinations, rhythms and routines. The advanced dancers will also learn to improvise. The Adult Multi-Level Tap class will include basic to advanced steps and rhythms, adjusted for each student’s level.

Caryn Yee has done tap choreography and performed in multiple shows at Diamond Head Theatre, including Crazy for You, White Christmas, The Producers, Anything Goes, Wizard of Oz, Will Roger’s Follies and more. She recently choreographed the full production of 42nd Street for DHT’s 100th Anniversary Year. Caryn also teaches & choreographs for the DHT Shooting Stars and the Punahou Tap Company. She received her training at Punahou Dance School, Dupree Dance Academy and The Edge in Los Angeles.

Greta Smith Aeby started dancing at the age of eight in Albuquerque, New Mexico and went on to become the head instructor at one of the local dance studios.   She is trained in ballet, tap, jazz, acrobatics and baton twirling.   She has over 15 years experience teaching all types of dance from pre-school up through adults, and coached competitive dance, drill, pom pom and baton twirling teams.    She has danced in numerous community theatre productions in New Mexico and Hawaii including Jesus Christ Superstar, Cabaret, West Side Story, Oliver, King & I, Sugar, Pippin, Anything Goes, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Funny Girl, and 42nd Street.
