Dear Theatre Lover,
Can you sing or dance? I can't. But I love to watch those who can. Luckily, I'm in the right job, because Diamond Head Theatre has singers and dancers galore on our stage. When one of them belts out a tune in one of our musicals, I get chicken skin. It's exciting.
I wonder, as perhaps you do, how did they become singers and dancers? When did they start? Is it talent they were born with or good training?
That's what is so special about our summer program, Musical Theatre Experience (MTE). At Diamond Head Theatre, we get to see how it happens from all persepectives. We take 75 kids from seven to 17 years old, no experience needed. Many of them walk in the first day never having sung much more than nursery rhymes or having danced a step, and certainly never having been on stage.
At the end of six weeks, they are singing and dancing like pros. It's an amazing transformation. And their parents are even more amazed. They often say, "I never thought my child could do that!" And the best part, some of those children didn't think they could either. Think of the confidence and self-esteem that brings!
It gets better. Having taken a chance and had some rewarding fun, many MTE students audition for other productions at our theatre. This fall, almost one third of the kids auditioning for the Diamond Head Theatre Shooting Stars were MTE students. Several made it. Other MTE'ers auditioned for Cinderella. Again, several got roles. Each step builds on the last, and if they get knocked down, that's a learning experience too. They'll be back in MTE next summer, working even harder on their auditioning skills, their singing or their dancing.
All this happens thanks to you. Our donors are the backbone of our education programs. Without your help, these kids wouldn't have the chance to be taught to sing and dance. And, they would never know what they were really capable of.
